My name is German Lopez; I was born May 16th 1958 in the state of Puebla, Mexico. I started Tae Kwon Do in 1975 in the city of Tehuacan, Puebla. After practicing 5 years I couldn’t do my black belt test because it was too expensive for me. This made me decide to emigrate to the United States, but I didn’t count with a passport or visa to come legally.
I decided to cross the Arizona desert illegally; I walked 12 hours and was able to get to Yuma, Arizona. After taking a cargo train I reached Los Angeles, California in January of 1981 with the intention of continuing to practice Tae Kwon Do which changed my life. Before Tae Kwon Do I was a very violent person and liked to fight in the streets, but Tae Kwon Do changed me to become a better human being. This made me decide that my mission was to teach Tae Kwon Do to the people.
In 1981 I continued practicing in a school that was in the city of Hollywood with Master Nam Wong Kim. I taught in this school until 1983 and in 1984 I opened my first school with the intention of promoting Tae Kwon Do in the Mexican and Latino community.
In 1994 I organized the first International Tae Kwon Do Championship in the Grand Olympic Auditorium with the support of the General Mexican Consulate continuing until this date with this tournament every year.
In the time period of 1994-1995 I taught Tae Kwon Do in the East L.A. College. In 1994 I began the practice of Hapkido with Grand Master Yuen Bae Kim, president of the World Pro Hapkido Federation in which I still am today.
In the time period of 1998-2001 I worked teaching Tae Kwon Do in the Youth program of E.L.A. Sheriffs Department. In 1988 I traveled to Korea to take my 4th Dan exam. In 1992 I traveled to Korea to take my 5th Dan exam and in 1998 I took the first course for instructors given by the World Tae Kwon Do Academy and Kukkiwon. In 2005 I traveled to Korea to take my 7th Dan exam.
In the present time I am the president of Azteca Tae Kwon Do Federation and the Latino Tae Kwon Do Union which we have in the states of California, Arizona, and Texas which 30 schools are part of. I am also the secretary of the World Pro Hapkido Federation.
I want to give thanks to all the people in Korea for this beautiful martial art which changed my life and helped me change the lives of many young adults in our communities. I love Tae Kwon Do and will dedicate the rest of my life to teaching it.
